November is American Diabetes Month
November is American Diabetes Month, and an ideal time to raise awareness about diabetes and healthy living. Diabetes is one of the leading causes of disability and death in the United States. One in 10 Americans has diabetes – that’s more than 30 million people. And another 84 million adults in the United States are at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
Even if well-controlled, persons with diabetes have a harder time fighting infections, and the complications associated with vaccine- preventable diseases can be even worse for those with diabetes. Influenza can raise blood sugar to dangerously high levels. Additionally, those with diabetes are at greater risk of dying from pneumonia, bacteremia and meningitis. Recommended vaccines such as a yearly flu vaccine, two pneumococcal vaccines and a shingles vaccine play a critical role in protecting the health of those with diabetes.
